Training & Development:
Small logo, effective identity

Sometimes the logo and signature play a secondary role in the design. In these two catalog covers from Campus Human Resources, the dominant design elements are the dramatic photos of UCLA doorways and the publication title, "Training & Development Catalog." The UCLA Campus Human Resources signature is relatively small in scale - but thanks to the legibility of the logo, the UCLA identity of the publication is immediately obvious.

The designs are also an excellent example of how to refresh a cover concept. The first cover (below right) uses a dozen different photos to create a pattern, framed in UCLA blue. The second cover (above) takes a single photo and repeats it three times, nesting one photo inside the other. The result is a pair of covers with a single theme - training as a doorway - but distinct designs. No one would confuse the two publications, no one would doubt they are related.

Thanks to cover designer Ken Leonard (Canyon Road Design) and Robert Gibson, Director of Training & Development. UCLA doors photos by Carol Petersen.
